Donna Wandrey's Swedish Yellow Pea Soup
from the Dark Shadows Celebrity Cookbook

Donna Wandrey seems to be nothing less than a soup sorceress!  Here is Swedish Yellow Pea Soup from the Dark Shadows Celebrity Cookbook.  It's a hearty and healthy blend of meat broth made from a ham bone, and yellow split peas as traditionally made by the Swedes.  Interestingly, the same preparation is a long-time Canadian culinary tradition which made its way to New England, where it also has been established as a favorite dish,  particularly in Maine.  It's delicious and filling on a cold day or night and Ms. Wandrey has suggested the added touch of sliced and roasted salt pork on rye bread with country mustard as a sparky accompaniment for the soup.  Like all good soups made from scratch this recipe takes time, so plan to make it on a rainy (or better yet a snowy) day.  Vegetarians can use a favorite vegetable broth (leaving out the salt pork, of course) and can still enjoy a great tasting soup.
