Lara Parker's Devil's Food Cake
from the Dark Shadows Celebrity Cookbook

You were expecting an angel food cake from Angelique?  Think again.  Lara Parker clearly enjoys great food and cooking and offers in the Dark Shadows Celebrity Cookbook a knockout Devil's Food Cake that you're certain to love and will find yourself making again.  It's an old fashioned layer cake made with melted unsweetened chocolate (instead of the usual cocoa powder) and brown sugar which gives the cake a depth of flavor that is quite unexpected and tantalizingly delicious.  The liquid ingredients include buttermilk, a welcome addition to cakes since it adds lightness and flavor and a velvety crumb.  If you have your butter, eggs, and buttermilk at room temperature the batter goes together smoothly and easily.  While the cake is baking the warm chocolatey fragrance is spellbinding.  If you have a pentagram you should be wearing it or have it in the nearby when your preparing any baked goods.  This will ensure success and keep unwanted evil spirits out of the kitchen.  Keep a black candle burning also to draw in good energy.  Miss Parker suggests enjoying this scrumptious cake plain with a glass of milk.  Wonderful!  She also says you can frost it if you like.  I decided to have my cake and eat it too so I tried it both ways and found each one to be a real treat.  Remember to watch your baking time because like most cakes 25 minutes is usually enough depending on your oven, and your altitude. Did Angelique make this cake at Collinwood?  I'm not sure, but I'll bet it was the cake that was on the table at David's mysterious dream sequence birthday party.
